Duchesne Hosts Food Network-Style Cooking Competition Featuring Celebrity Chef Jet Tila

Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart will team up with celebrity chef Jet Tila and Flik Independent School Dining to host a fun-filled and educational cooking competition between Houston-area students on December 7, 2017. The event will benefit local Houston charities.

Four teams, consisting of students in grades 6-8, will cook unique dishes in a two-round competition. Much like the Food Network shows that inspired this cooking competition, there will be specific sabotages to encourage problem-solving skills among participating students.

Chef Tila will engage with the students, and the competition will be judged based on the following criteria: taste, presentation, creativity, and team participation. Although one team will emerge victorious, all those participating will come away winners having learned practical skills in cooking and how to work as part of a team.

In preparation for the competition, students from each school are learning how to cook by working with their school's executive chef in their school's kitchen. Teams from the following schools will participate:

  • British International School of HoustonCornerstone Christian Academy
  • Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart
  • Fort Bend Christian Academy
  • The Village School

The team from Duchesne includes several students from the Middle School who have been taking weekly cooking lessons. The girls have learned knife skills, as well as culinary fundamentals such as how to cook rice and plating techniques.

Family and friends are encouraged to attend the competition which starts at 6:00 p.m. in the gym at Duchesne Academy. Donations to local Houston charities in support of Hurricane Harvey relief efforts will be collected at the door.
