Lower School Summer Work

Incoming Pre-K3 and Pre-K4

  • Read (or have read to them) a minimum of 20 picture books and keep track using the reading log. This reading log can be turned into your homeroom teachers on the first day of school. 

Incoming Kindergarten

  • Read (or have read to them) a minimum of 25 picture books and keep track using the reading log. This reading log can be turned into your homeroom teachers on the first day of school. 

Incoming 1st Grade

  • Read 30 picture books or 200 pages and keep track using the reading log. This reading log can be turned into your homeroom teachers on the first day of school. 
  • In math, 1st Graders should log into Reflex Math (at least 1-2 times a week) to increase their addition and subtraction skills. A completed lesson is achieved when the black dot becomes fully green in the top right corner.

Incoming 2nd Grade

  • Read a minimum of 225 pages and keep track using the reading log. This reading log can be turned into your homeroom teachers on the first day of school. 
  • In math, 2nd-grade students should be at 100% on addition and subtraction in Reflex Math. Once complete, they should continue with Dreambox.

Incoming 3rd Grade

  • Read a minimum of 250 pages and keep track using the reading log. This reading log can be turned into your homeroom teachers on the first day of school. 
  • In math, 3rd-grade students should continue to work on Reflex Math and Dreambox. They should be proficient with math facts through 9+9 and subtraction facts through 18-9 and then begin multiplication facts.

Incoming 4th Grade

Reading

Read at least TWO “just right” books this summer. One book must be fiction, and one must be nonfiction. 

Complete one activity from the vocabulary choice menu and one from the writing choice menu. You may complete both activities using one of your books. Please bring your two completed assignments on the first day of school. 

Math

Problem-Solving Choice Project

  • Pick one or more projects from the attached document to complete and return on the first day of school. 

Computation and number sense. You may use websites such as  https://www.commoncoresheets.com/ or https://www.math-drills.com/ for practice          

  • Addition: Quick recall of facts through 10+10, Add up to 8-digit by 8-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. 
  • Subtraction: Quick recall of facts through 18-9, Subtract up to 8-digit by 8-digit numbers using the standard algorithm, including subtracting across zeros. 
  • Multiplication: Quick recall of facts 1-12. Multiply up to 2 by 2 digits using the standard algorithm. See attached document of examples.   • Division: Quick recall of facts 1-12. 
  • Understanding of fact families and inverse operations. Example: 5-3=2, 5-2=3, 2+3=5, and 3+2=5. 12/3=4, 12/4=3, 3x4=12, 4x3=12.
  • Name the place values in order from tenths to ten billion. 
  • Name the value of a digit from tenths to ten billion. 

 

Writing (optional)

Keep a daily or weekly writing journal to practice your writing skills. You can write about anything you want!
