4 Tips for Success in Online Learning

Written by Lucia Chamness, Duchesne Upper School Student

Many students are doing online classes this school year. Whether you are part-time or full-time online, classes can be more efficient with these four tips for remote learning.

1. Plan a Daily Routine

Create a schedule. Get a calendar or notepad and plan your day. Begin your day with a good meal. A good breakfast has been proven to enhance concentration and promote better memory. I like starting my day around an hour before my first virtual class because it gives me time to get dressed, eat, and comfortably settle into my day. A daily routine can look very different for different people, so try a few different routines and see what works for you!

2. Create a Learning Space

Create a good learning space to do your schoolwork and online class meetings. Ideally, this space should allow for the following:

  1. Eliminate/minimize distractions
  2. Create a clean space to work
  3. Set up your materials before class

It is best to work somewhere that is not your room because your brain associates your room with sleep and relaxation. If that is not an option, then sectioning off an area in your room like a desk/workspace can help keep you focused. Make sure that your workspace is clutter-free and does not have many distractions. Before you start your day, have your laptop/computer charged and any materials you will use throughout the day at hand.

3. Do Not Procrastinate

It can be easier when you are at home to begin to put things off. Create a checklist of things you must get done in a day. Create the list at the beginning of the day. It can be detailed with times you need everything done by or it can be simple.

4. Get Outside

Take time out of your day to take a walk or a drive. It helps to clear your mind in the middle or end of your day. This can be like a reset to help you continue to focus.
