Sylvia Duarte ‘20, Avnika Dubey ‘20, and Danielle Linbeck ’20 earned Academic All-American Awards and participated in the Tournament of Champions.

Duchesne's debate team has had an outstanding year with several team members earning national recognition.

NSDA Academic All-American Awards

The National Speech and Debate Association named Sylvia Duarte ‘20, Avnika Dubey ‘20, and Danielle Linbeck ’20  Academic All-Americans. The Academic All-American award recognizes high school students who have earned the degree of Superior Distinction (750 debate points), completed at least 5 semesters of high school, demonstrated outstanding character and leadership, and earned a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale and/or a 1300+ SAT/27+ ACT. Duchesne now has 6 NSDA Academic All-Americans, with 5 students earning the award in the last 2 seasons.

Tournament of Champions

Earlier this month, Duchesne participated in the Tournament of Champions (TOC), a prestigious speech and debate national championship that showcases the best debaters in the best country. This year was the first time that Duchesne attempted to qualify for this championship and the team sent entries in both speech and debate, an impressive accomplishment. Duchesne is one of the only all-girls schools in the country to ever attend this championship.

In debate, the team of Sylvia and Danielle missed elimination rounds but picked up impressive wins over Coronado (NV) and Acton-Boxborough (MA). Both teams were ranked higher than Duchesne during the regular season. In poetry and prose, Avnika produced some impressive results against more experienced national circuit speech students.
