Help for Haiti

In light of the recent, tragic events in Haiti, Duchesne Academy has come together to support those in need and contribute to the aid of the people there. The students, faculty and staff have developed many projects to raise funds and elevate awareness about the destruction in Haiti.

Every year the Lower School collects money during lent for the tuition of three girls at our sister school in Uganda. This year, any money raised over the amount needed for Uganda will go to Haiti. The Lower Schoolers raise funds by doing chores and then contributing what they earn to the fundraiser.

The Lower School also raises money by collecting Box Tops. This year, a lower school faculty member has promised to match what the students raise and donate the money to Haiti. Last year, the Lower School raised $340 and the faculty member has promised to give at least that regardless of what is raised. Fourth grade has also started a special Valentine's Day project to raise money for Haiti. They are drawing and selling hearts for one dollar through February 12. The hearts will be hung in the school hallway.

The eighth grade art class is currently working on a project entitled "Horror and Hope." The large charcoal drawings are powerful representations of the students' feelings toward the tragedy in Haiti. The

Upper School has begun a collection of medical supplies for health kits. The health kits provide bandages, hygienic tools, and basic necessities to the victims of the disaster. Those wishing to contribute can either purchase the supplies themselves or donate $12 to cover the cost of the supplies. The health kits will be distributed among those affected by the earthquake and will be a small comfort in this time of great need.

In addition to these projects, Duchesne Academy continues to support the Sacred Heart Missions in Haiti. Since their inception in 2000, Duchesne has supported the missions in Port-au-Prince, and now because of the destruction, in Verrettes. The Religious work with young people, teaching basic literacy skills, as well as with young adults, providing teacher training and spiritual direction.

The four Religious serving in Port-au-Prince are safe. Though their house was destroyed, they are eager to continue serving and loving the people of Haiti. Duchesne encourages anyone interested in making a donation to visit www.AASHnet.org.
