On Saturday, Jan. 23, twelve Duchesne eighth graders participated in the 17th annual Future City Competition. Chevaira, a future city near Charleston, SC designed by Rebekah Smith, Maria Amaya, and Sandhya Sihra placed third overall. Other teams received awards for best manufacturing zone, best designed infrastructure, best residential zone and best student presenter. Mrs. Kathy Duquesnay received a mentor award for having the most teams from any one school and also received a personalized engraved award for a decade of support for the Future City Competition.
The Future City Competition is for seventh and eighth graders. Participants used the Sim City 4 computer game to design a city in the year 2150 or later with at least 50,000 residents and a complete infrastructure essential to any city. The students built a scale model of part of the city, wrote a 700 to 1000 word essay, wrote a 300 to 500 word narrative, and gave a seven minute presentation about their city to the judges.
This year's essay topic was providing a green affordable living space for people who have lost their home to a disaster or financial emergency. The Duchesne teams designed cities in locations ranging from Arizona to Indonesia. All of these students started working on this project in September and did a fantastic job.
