US Tennis Team Makes a "Statement" at State
Wonderful things were happening in Waco, Texas this weekend for the Duchesne Tennis Team as they participated in the TAPPS State Tennis Tournament. Despite several mornings of rain, nothing could dampen the Chargers pursuit of a Team Title. Last year they came within a ½ point of taking it home.
This year they left nothing to doubt as the clinched the title by the end of the Semi-Finals, dispatching Bishop Nolan, El Paso Loretto, Dallas Ursuline and all the others in their wake. Freshman Farris Cunningham won the Singles State Title making it to the Finals without losing a game. Equally impressive was our Doubles Team of Junior Jenna Dodge and Senior Clothilde Thirouin who finished with the silver medal as State Runner-ups. Sophomore Kelsey Van Noy made it through to the Elite Eight, gaining the Team valuable points toward the title.
And finally the Doubles Team of Sophomore Lexi Cunningham and Catherine Butler lost early to the eventual State Champion Doubles Team in the opening round, but earned a point for the Team by making it to State Tournament.
Congratulations to all of our players, to Doubles Alternate Evelyne Cras who cheered her teammates all the way, and to our Coaches Carman West and Shirley Mendoza.
US Track Team Runs Their Way To State
This weekend our exciting US Track Team ventured all the way to Plano, Texas to compete in the Regional 5A Track Championships wherein the Top 4 finishers in each event punch their tickets into the State Finals to be held in Waco in 2 weeks.
As most know by now, the ladies ran and jumped well enough to finish 2nd overall against schools much larger than Duchesne like Bishop Lynch, Nolan Catholic, John Paul II, St. Agnes and Trinity Christian. Coach Jackson spoke highly about the Team effort that produced results with all 3 relays finishing 1st or 2nd in each of their events. Qualifying individually were: Shannon Klenke in the 1 and 2 mile events, Kim Horrell in the Pole Vault, Jackie Manley in the 800 M Run, Cristina Calderon in the 100 M Dash, Sarah Welter in the 400 M Dash, and Brianna Shay in the 300 M High Hurdles.
Like the Tennis Team, our Track Team had to battle the elements and came through like the District Champions they are! Congratulation to all of the ladies who ran, threw, jumped or vaulted for us this weekend.
Congratulations to Coaches Kenneth Jackson, Goldy Jackson, Melvin Baker and Rochelle Smith who helped them excel. Also, Good Luck in 2 Weeks in Waco at State.
